Dandy Dab is one of three canned craft ciders that Purbeck Cider Company offer. The other two being Muddy Scamp and Katy & Perry.
Dandy Dab is the lowest percentage one of the three, sitting at a respectable 5%.
Purbeck have really acheived something special with these three, drawing inspiration from “charming characters” around the cider farm.
I was told these were created to tackle the national decline of Scrumpy sales. Scrumpies just aren’t selling as well these days and I can understand way, despite it being a sad truth.
It think these ciders do a great job and being on the traditional side, but mordernising the flavour and making it more accessible for a mainstream audience. That being said, I’m not sure the mainstream will enjoy them so much. That’s not a bad thing and I don’t think they’re necessarily targeting that audience anyway.
Hopefully they’re enough to capturing back the previous Scrumpy drinkers.
Anyway, enjoy this review of Dandy Dab!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Dandy Dab comes in a very quirky 330ml can. The quirky tweed-wearing Mallard on the label really sets the tone for this cider.
The drink itself is a darker yellow – like dirty duck water, but cleaner and more pallatable! The colour vaguely reminds me of corn.
An intake of fresh cool cider enters my nostrils and tickles my nose hair.
Gentle sweet tones travel softly up. A slight hint of apple skins – what seems to be Purbeck’s signature smell.
Dandy Dab is surprisingly dry – that’ll be those apple flesh notes.
There is a sweet undertone burried below the prominet river of tannins and despite being on the drier side, Dandy Dab is really refreshing and juicy.
Thoughout the middle there’s a subtle taste of pulp froth.
