Pulpt Ltd Edition 3 Cider review
Back to all KEY TAKEAWAYS 7.6% ABV Dark Amber, burnt
We’ve previously reviewed Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime on the blog and we had a good time with it. It’s exactly what you’d expect.
We wish we could say the same about Lidl’s imitation, SOTMA Strawberry and Lime. This one is a real doozy, so enjoy!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Similarities
Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime
Lidl’s Sotma Strawberry and Lime
Both these Strawberry and Lime Ciders have an alcohol content of 4% ABV (alcohol by volume). This is predictable for a mainstream fruit cider…wish I could predict the experience ahead of me!
Popping the cap and pouring the fruit cider into the wine glass, reveals a pleasant pink liquid.
The cider fizzes gently and creates and light foam as it settles. Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime is a pale, Rose pink colour. As expected, it’s quite nice.
As I mentioned in my previous review of this cider, I’m not sure if I like the smell. It’s surprisingly complex for a mainstream cider. There is a burst of strawberry to start with, which is nice but then its followed by a blend of apple and lime which finishes the smell in a sharp way. It just ends up being a little odd.
Koppaberg Strawberry and Lime is exactly what you’d expect and WANT from a fruit cider – emphasis on the “want”.
It’s refreshing, it’s juicy, its fruity and moreish. The strawberry provides a nice yoghurty flavour, like those small ones you have as a kid. Remember then? All those years ago when you couldn’t drink cider.
What’s nice about Kopparberg is that they use apples as the base, then add real strawberry and lime fruit juice for flavour. All the sweetness is natural and only their lighter ranges use sweetners.
Yes, Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime is vegan and gluten friendly!
Sotma Strawberry and Lime is an imitation cider by Lidl.
Being an imitation, and at a cheaper price, you can expect to pour out a rose pink fruit cider in your glass.
The main difference in the look of this cider is the lack of the foam after its fizzing stage. This makes the cider come across as slightly heavier.
We’ve established that both Sotma and Kopparberg’s strawberry and lime sight offerings are very similar, but that’s about it for this imitation.
“It’s all down from here” – New Found Glory
I haven’t even lifted the glass off of the kitchen counter and its scent is already invading my nostrils.
At first Sotma Strawberry and Lime is a sweet smell, but overly sweet. It’s rich, thicker and, again has some yoghurty levels to it, but it’s too much. Just by smelling it, I can tell this contains sweetners, or at least articficial flavourings.
It gets worse.
What follows is a very bizarre, and unwelcoming pastry and biscuity smell. You’re probably thinking “what on earth is this guy on about?” but trust me, go out and buy this cider and you’ll understand.
It gets even worse as we go into tasting it.
I always worry about being too nice in my reviews – I’m very much a people pleaser.
Today I’m taking life by the balls, growing a backbone and telling you that this cider is an absolute shit fest.
It starts off being almost the same as Koppaberg. It really teases you. Sweet flavours dance on your tongue, showing you what you think is a good time.
What follows is a vile, shocker of unpalatable sequences.
Like the infamous Red Wedding in Game of Thrones, it pulls out little daggers and starts attacking every tastebud.
Remember that pastry and biscuit smell I mentioned?
Of course you do.
Well this is reflected in the tasting experience too.
A horrid ensemble of pastry, wheat and biscuits creeps up on you 10 seconds later and genuinely makes you flinch, gasp and choke like a Stark (GoT reference, for those uneducated).
Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime is the clear winner here. For the first time in InCider Press history I’m refusing to score the smell and taste of a Cider.
Sotma Strawberry and Lime is not drinkable and those that are indulging in this Cider are probably pyschopaths.
Kopparberg is nice though.
